Potato Bonsai

A friend spotted this neat little kit called "Potato Bonsai" in a store and he thought that I would like it. So he picked it up and saved it for me.

Sure enough. I got a big kick out of it.

It is a borderline hilarious little kit that is very tongue in cheek.

It comes with a booklet of wisdom and care, a little stand, a pair of scissors and a pair of tweezers. Here are some hilarious quotes from the book.

The Bonsai Potato Kit

Enlightenment through the art of bonsai potato:

See the potato, feel the potato, be the potato!

"In this book you will discover that nothing is simpler than cultivating a bonsai potato... It doesn't need soil, fertilizer, sunlight or water.... You will discover that it will literally grow itself! You won't need to spend much time on it. It is a quicker and easier way to enlightenment so you can spend time on important things like enlightenment."

The Art of the Bonsai Potato (Mini Kit)

Instant karma! This tongue-in-cheek kit pokes fun at Western culture's twin desires for inner harmony and instant gratification. A Bonsai Potato grows in about a month. In the meantime, an enclosed facsimile can be displayed with the miniature stand and rocks.

Ok! So the booklet is hilarious and this of course isn't real bonsai but I figured what the heck. I will give it a try.

It takes four to six weeks for a potato to get going with its growing of shoots and I didn't have any potatoes in the cupboard so I put a call out to friends and family members. Sure enough somebody had a nice bunch of potatoes with all kinds of crazy stalks.

Trim the potato

Let's trim a few down and see what happens.

So! We trimmed some up. Let's keep an eye on them and see what happens.
