Make a rubber band shooting gun-sword Part 3: Gluing it together

In this part of the tutorial we glue together the parts that make up the gun sword.

For those three dots we made on the parts we now need to puncture them with a sharp object. Push all the way through but don't make the holes wide. Just puncture the whole foamboard thickness. We need these holes to line up the axle for the trigger.

Glue the pommel/handle piece in place.

Then glue the guard piece in place.

Then glue the second blade piece in place.

Okay! You are doing great. This is how it looks.

Put the trigger in that chamber.

Next we will dry fit the top piece. This means we put it together first with no glue so we can check it and make sure the trigger works correctly. We can make adjustments then we can glue it.

Put the top piece on.

And push the wooden back end of a small paintbrush through all three holes. You can use a small round pencil or a wooden dowel. Think of using something reasonably strong and round.

Line everything up and test the trigger. You should be able to smoothly manipulat the trigger. In one end of it's range the hook for the rubber band should stick out like this.

And in the other end of the trigger range the little hook should totally disappear.

At this point, if it doesn't work well you are still good. You can open it up and trim the trigger a little bit. Any parts that stick or rub on another part can be trimmed. Test again. And once you got the trigger action working correctly you can go ahead and glue that top blade on with the trigger in place in the trigger cavity.

This next picture shows where to apply glue. Pretty much everywhere. But stay a bit away from the trigger. We don't want glue getting on it and preventing it from moving.

Don't glue it and then put the paintbrush in. Put the paintbrush in as you are gluing the parts together. This way everything lines up correctly. Give it one last test and then we can move on to the detail work.

Once the glue sets you can trim that paintbrush. And glue it so it stays secure. Just make sure glue doesn't seep down into the trigger chamber. That would stop the trigger motion.

Okay, Let's continue making the gunsword
