The Black Sword

There is a bit of a fun story behind this sword. And as a project it ended up sending me down a curious little rabbit-hole of discovery when it comes to black, how black is black? and What is the blackest black?

I also have a video tutorial for this project at the bottom of the page.

The idea for this sword came to me when I was doing a standard foam board sword (The Wonder Woman God Killer). When I do a sword like this I first lay down a layer of black paint. It's a base coat and it makes a difference in how the silver of the sword shows up. But, I noticed that the sword looked pretty cool black. So, I made a note to make a black sword. And here it is!

About the black paint

While thinking about this project and doing my initial work on it I started thinking about black paint. And the thought occurred to me that there might be some blacks that are blacker than others. It is available on Amazon here: Black 2.0

I do have two versions of this sword. One that is completely black. And one that has the silver and gold handle/guard.

Which version do you like better?

For me this project was pretty straight forward. I researched black paint and ordered the blackest paint I could get. Then I drew up a sword, put it together and painted it. Not a whole lot to this project but it was fun nonetheless.

I designed out the sword, simply drawing it onto foam board.

Made two of them and glue them together with hot glue.

And then cut out the center hole. Gluing them both together first then cutting out the hole will make a cleaner build.

Then I sanded the rough edges.

And added a guard as detail.

Then I went ahead and painted it.

That's it!

I had painted the foamboard underneath a little bit too.
