A bee smoker is a neat little tool and an essential part of every beekeepers toolbox. Below is a picture of the bee smoker that I use.

The smoker calms the bees down and makes them more docile.

It triggers a response in them that there is a fire. But, they don't immediately leave the hive, the start to gorge themselves on honey.

You can use a variety of burnable material in a smoker and dried pine needles works pretty good. But the best thing you can use is pellets designed particulary for smokers.
