How to Bottle Mead

Bottling mead is easy. You just need a few pieces of equipment and to know a few basic things. I show you the whole process and everything you need right here.

To bottle mead you need a few pieces of equipment and you need to do a few things.

Bottling Mead

First you have to insure your mead is complete in it's ferment. I am going to assume you have already checked this. If you are unsure I have a quick overview of knowing when to bottle right here: Mead making timeline questions

Okay, you are ready to bottle. the next thing you need to do is insure your bottles and corks are properly sanitized. You don't want to just wash them. You want to "sanitize" them. This is because you are bottling a food! You sanitize the bottles by soaking them in a sanitizing agent. I use the kitchen sink and a product called One-Step.

(A side note: One-Step Cleanser is a very inexpensive cleaner that you use to sanitize all your equipment. You mix it with water. It is available on amazon here: One-Step)

Simply fill your sink with water, add the One-Step and soak your bottles in it.

With the corks you can boil them in water for 15 minutes. This creates two benefits. It sanitizes the corks and it softens them up so they go in the bottles easier.

Equpment needed:

  • Your batch of mead
  • 4 wine bottles per gallon of mead (bottles are here)
  • a siphon hose- an autosiphon is even better (autosiphon)
  • Corks - They come in different sizes. I recommend you use a #9 cork that is 1 3/4" in length. (Recommended corks)
  • A corker - The standard corking tool is called a Portuguese double lever corker. (Corker available right here)

Now you siphon the mead into a bottle, put a cork in the corker, then use the corker to insert the cork into the bottle. It really is quite easy. And I have a video showing exactly how I do it.

Want to add a little bit of panache to your bottles of mead? I have a video showing you how to add wax seals to the corks. It looks great.
