Where to buy Mead near you?

Mead is a specialized item. It occupies a niche so it isn't widely available. But, it has grown significantly over the past decade so it is becoming more and more available.

But, you might have to do a little bit of work to figure out where near you to buy it.

I have done the research for you. Here are my tips and guidelines for finding a place near you where you can get it!

Mead is an alcoholic beverage so you have to take that into consideration. It is a wine just like grape wines except that it is fermented with honey rather than grapes.

I read somewhere that everyone in america is no more than 30 minutes away from a walmart so this is your best first choice.

Hidden Legend MeadAnd start your search online at the walmart.com website. Set it to your local store and and then the secret to success with it is to search for "Honey Wine" rather than "Mead". That will get you their in-stock selection.

I did this with the website and my local walmart and it came up with what they had in store including two meads from Hidden Legend which I have tasted and I like. I even have a review of it here on my website. And the walmart search also came up with

Walmart - Check your local walmart! And you can check at first with walmart online (Walmart.com)

Actual liquor stores are difficult for me to pin down for you. This is because there are no national chains. This comes from the fact that every state has different laws, rules and requirements for liquor and alcoholic beverages. So, no company has fully expanded. But, a chain called Total Wine and More does have 176 locations spread around.

And Total Wine & More does carry Mead. So if you have one of their stores near you then you should give them a try! (Total Wine & More)

I live in Phoenix which is a big city. So there are a lot of resources. And we have a Total Wine and more so I stopped in. I found four different meads. There were two different types of Chaucer Mead, a Bunratty meade, a Redstone Mead and a Sky River Mead. I never tried Sky River Mead so I got a bottle. I have a picture of it here on the left. And I have a review of it right here.

When searching for meads online or by calling your local liquor store here are some of the more common brands you can search for or ask for. This is often a good way to figure out if they have mead. (I have noticed that often times the people who work at these stores have never heard of mead, even though they carry it.)

These next two have been around for a long time - and have been on shelves long before mead was popular. They always had a small niche so your best bet to finding a mead nearby to you would be with one of these two:

Chaucer's Mead and Bunratty Meade

Total Wine & More has both of these, and my local Total wine also has Rabbits Foot Mead and Redstone Mead.

Tips for when calling your local liquor store:

Mead is a niche product and there is a good chance that whoever answers the telephone has never heard of it. You might try a few key phrases like this:

Mead

or Honey Wine

or wine made from Honey

or Chaucers Mead

or Bunratty Meade.

Or ask if they have a selection of dessert wines. Because it is made from honey it is often thought of and even fermented as a dessert wine.

These keywords might spark a memory for the clerk or employee.

Many meaderies (This is a place that makes mead) also have tastings or sell the mead right there in a store located at their meadery. Check out my mead map of meaderies around the U.S. to see if there is one near you. You can call them or check out their website for more information. You can also ask them what local liquor stores sell their mead!

Here is my google map of meaderies in the United States.
