A motivational thought about adventuring

I stayed a few days in a motel somewhere in Utah. I would park my car just in front of this doorway here. My room was on the second floor right near this door and stairwell.

Well, I would work at my laptop in my room then every couple of hours I would go out and sit in my car to have a cigarette. Or I would stand near the ashtray there on the top of the waste container. I would be looking right at this door.

The thing is that when I first arrived I grabbed a bunch of luggage and my hands were full. My keycard was in a pocket somewhere. And you can see the little scanner on the wall near the inner door. You are supposed to run your keycard through that scanner to unlock the door. Well, my hands were full and rather than rummage for it I pulled on the handle with my wrist and the door opened right up. Come to find out the keycard wasn't working and the door never locked. So, to use this door you don't need a keycard at all. Just pull the handle.

But, for the few days I was there I always saw people fumbling for their keycards, swiping and then opening the door.

I even saw one guy standing there looking through all his pockets, to no avail. He then walked off toward the office to get another keycard but never tried the door.

And it struck me that we do this kind of a thing in life an awful lot. We follow the patterns and proscribed habits set out for us. And we never just go for it and try the door.

And this little trip I have taken around America is a bit of a lesson. Sometimes you just have to give it a try and go for it. You never know what doors will open for you if you just try.
