Make a Miniature House Model - Part 2

In this part of the tutorial we take a look at the detail work of the house. We pick one wall and I walk you through the steps to make it look like the house including the siding and the window and door work.

In this part of the tutorial I will walk you through the building of this piece of the house. It will show you a lot of the techniques and materials used to make the complete house.

One segment of the house

The drawing

We drew out the piece so we could get the scale and the measurements right. We did this for all the pieces in the model.

Cut out of foam board

We have done our measurements so we know the size and dimensions of each flat plane of the house. So, for this piece we measure it out on foamboard and then cut it out. We also cut out the window and the door.

Lap siding

Now we are going to cover the complete wall with something called lap siding. This is made by dollhouse manufacturers and it comes in a variety of materials and sizes.

Affix the lap siding

Cut the lap siding and glue it to the foamboard. You can cut it in one piece or in several pieces depending on what makes sense for each segment of the house. We used 3-in-1 glue for this. Most glues are quite ok. We like the 3 in 1 because it has good tack and will hold on it's own while drying.

Paint the siding

Then paint it. I actually took a piece of the vinyl siding from the house and brought it to a home improvement store so they could color match it for me. I got a quart of it.

Cut thin strips

Next we will do the framing around the window and door. We do this with strips of thin plastic. But you can also use a thick paper or cardstock.

Add molding

Fold it into L our U shapes and glue it all the way around the door and window. In this picture one more piece is needed at the top of the door.

Cutting for the door

The window and the door are made from bits of balsa wood.

The completed piece

And that's it. The piece is done. The steps we followed with this piece is repeated many times over with the rest of the house.

Various walls and pieces

Here are some various pieces with the siding being applied.
