Medieval Buildings made out of paper.

Here are some amazing medieval buildings made out of paper. These are all made by Gary Nichols. And he tells us his techniques for making them.

These buildings are pretty darn amazing and something like this is a whole lot of work.

All the models I make are from scratch in roughly 28mm scale, which makes it easier to add detail. Every model starts out with a search of the net for photos of medieval buildings.

I then recreate them in a photo editing program called PhotoImpact Pro, drawing each wall, door, window, roof section, and extras by hand and adding textures I find on free texture websites. Everything gets printed out on letter-size 110lb card stock paper and looks very much like that of a model you would purchase.

The creation process is a long one (as is putting it together) and can take as long as 1 - 2 months during my free hours. Often, as I am constructing each model, many adjustments are necessary. I'll adjust the original work in the photo program as I make the changes. Foam board is used for the base, with some "foliage" added for realism. Sometimes my projects can be painstaking, but the end product is rewarding and I cannot wait to begin the next one. Card stock modeling will always have a place in my hobby schedule.

Make this Medieval Castle

Make this Medieval Castle by Usborne

This was the first paper castle I ever made. It was given to me as a gift and I have been hooked ever since.

Printed on stiff card, this book contains templates to cut out and construct a superb model of a 14th century castle crammed with authentic detail. The model includes miniature characters for re-creating castle life, including market stalls and jousting knights as well as a portcullis that lifts and falls. The base of the model measures 59 x 46cm.

Easy to Make Paper Castle by A.G. Smith

Easy to Make Paper Castle by A.G. Smith

Here's a sturdy, easy-to-assemble paper toy that will provide hours of fun and imaginative adventure for any child. Specially designed for children ages 4 to 10, this easy-to-construct three-dimensional model of a medieval castle comes complete with walls, towers, gate house, great hall, kitchen, well, ramp, and drawbridge. Also included are ten armored knights who stand ready to defend their towering fortress with swords, shields, lance, bows, and arrows.
Step-by-step instructions and simple exploded diagrams explain how to cut, fold, and glue each part, enabling youngsters (with perhaps minimal help from a parent or teacher) to assemble their very own castles ( 8 5/16" x 8 5/16" x 4 3/8"). Only a few additional inexpensive, readily available materials are required.
