Yesterday I mentioned that for three years I was a partner in a bread store and I loved that store and the thought of the beauty and simplicity of bread.
Let me tell you a bread story.
A few years ago my family was having a big get-together for the Christmas Holiday season.
Being a quirky guy I thought I would do a tiny thing that was interesting and unique for the gathering.
I would find out what the best bread in the world is, order it and bring it to the gathering.
After a lot of research I was confident that the best bread in the world comes out of a bakery in Paris called “Poilane” and they will ship it overnight anywhere in the world. And the overnight shipping is very important because French law does not allow any type of preservatives in bread. They have very strict rules about their food and in particular their bread.
I timed it out perfectly. The family party is on a Thursday. So I had the bread shipped overnight on Wednesday. That really is kind of amazing. That you can go online, order a loaf of bread from Paris and have it delivered the following morning. The bread, at the time cost about five dollars and the overnight shipping, if I remember correctly, cost me thirty five dollars. So be it. It’s a forty dollar loaf of the best bread in the world.
Anyhoo, on Wednesday night my sister called me to let me know some relatives were having trouble getting into town and the whole party was changed, put off three days. It will now be held on Sunday.
Yup, my bread did arrive on Thursday morning. And it would have to sit around for an extra three days.
And of course, It was hard as a frisbee. After I had made a big fuss about overnighting, from Paris, the world’s best bread! Everybody had a good laugh about it! It still was quite the hit of the party. Because of the absurdity of it all.
But we made the most of it. I sliced it up thin with a saw tooth knife and we toasted it, and spread various marmalades and jams on it. It still was good.
I am thinking about doing a similar thing with Truffles. They are a fancy food for rich people and I am just a middle class guy; but hey, It might be interesting to have some truffles shipped over from Europe. Just to see how they are.
But I wonder if they go stale?
