In today’s world of Youtube, Rumble, and free video editing software it is very easy to create great videos and even movies on a very slim budget. Or even at no cost. And this is all terrific. But, it seems to me that an old school technique of film making has been overlooked. Just about any digital camera is acceptable for making an animation> You don’t need a fancy/expensive camera.
That is the art of Stop motion animation.
I really love this creative pursuit for a lot of different reasons. Here are a few:
- It is all about the story – It’s a terrific form of storytelling
- You have almost no limit to the setting/scenery because you can make your set on a small scale with a wide variety of materials. I often use cardboard to build my sets.
- You also have no limit to your characters. You can have lots of figures, animals, creatures or just about anything you can imagine. You just have to make them.
- Stop motion can be a beautiful combination of art forms. Like to draw? Have some artistic ability? You can story board your animation and you can get real creative with set design.
- Music – Do you have a musical inclination? Play an instrument? Well, how about writing a piece or a score for your animation?
- You get to do computer work too. Plenty of free software is available.
All in all you can be a one person Hollywood studio and can produce great “films” with some patience and some creativity. Here is a picture of a stop motion animation I am currently working on. It is called “A dream in a library and if you want to learn more about it: Right here
