I am a Youtuber. I have been creating videos for almost 20 years now. I also watch a lot of videos. And lately I have been watching videos about retirement. I am at that age. There are a lot of them. And they all are variations of the same things – saving money, spending money, how much money? What should you do? Bucket list items, goal setting, travel, etc. etc. etc.
But they all have the same thing in common. None of them talk about what actually is important when you get to your retirement years.
In my opinion it can be easily summed up with a famous quote: “Be in the world but not of the world.”
Maybe you have lived five, six, or more decades. And you have accumulated a lot of life experience. You have done and seen a lot of things; work, career, family, children, travel, school; and well the list is long and it is unique to you.
And maybe you are starting to notice something….
Your eyesight isn’t what it used to be. Same goes for your hearing. And your body doesn’t respond the way it used to. You can’t do the things you used to do without even thinking about it.
You see, as your body fades you are undergoing a separation process. You are being slowly separated from this Earthly existence.
It is a good and necessary step in your development as a human with a soul.
So what is the retirement advice I have for you?
Now is the time to review your life and prepare yourself for what’s next. Just like how your body is preparing itself for letting go of this world you should be preparing yourself emotionally and spiritually for letting go.
Spend time reviewing your life. Analyze the decisions you made. Look at the paths you have taken and use this to make yourself better in the now.
Treat people with more kindness.
Choose your words more carefully.
Spread good things, good feelings and good thoughts.
Do some fasting – it heals the body.
Do some praying – it calms the mind.
Strive to be more virtuous – it illuminates the soul.
You still live in this world so there are things you should not neglect. Continue to take care of yourself and those around you. But know, whether it be in ten years or twenty years, that those years will quickly pass and something more awaits you.
Retirement years are an amazing opportunity for you.
