I remember a news story I read many years ago. It was about a lawsuit that people had filed.
There were these people, I guess you could say they had a company, that was advertising an easy to follow weight loss program. And it was absolutely guaranteed to work.
But, it was expensive. Maybe a hundred dollars. I forget the exact amount.
If you bought the program and sent in your money what what you received was a postcard that had two words written on it: “Eat Less”.
That’s it. That is what you got for your hundred dollars.
Technically that weight loss program is correct. It is simple to follow and it will guarantee weight loss.
But did you really get good value for your money?
If you interpret this situation by man made laws it’s perfectly legal. And that’s the thing with man made laws. There are an infinite number of ways that you can bend them, work around them and manipulate them.
And if you have a strictly capitalist society then it becomes all about how to make the most money while not violating the law or in a way that doesn’t trigger legal action.
Concepts like honesty, integrity, and fairness quickly go out the window. There is no morality. It doesn’t factor in.
This is why Capitalism needs Christianity. Because Christianity brings a higher level to all our interactions.
It brings a set of behavior and interaction rules that are above the man made laws.
And the goals with Christianity are not about how to make more money. They are about how to be a better person, how to treat others well, how to help others, how to be a better member of your community.
And when people apply themselves to these values it acts as an overwatch and a throttle to runaway capitalism. It instills this different set of values and throttles the desire to simply make more money at just about any cost. – even your soul.
