Carl Sagan had a beautiful quote that I still remember decades after he said it. “The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.”
While this is a beautiful thing to say and even profound I think it’s a little bit off the mark – Well, just one word off.
I would replace “know” with “experience”.
We are another way for the universe to “experience” itself.
For me, “understanding is a step toward using and manipulating. Whereas “experiencing” has a very different connotation.
And this is where we should bel In the experiencing, not the understanding.
Because when attempting to understand we are facing an infinity – There is no end to it.
The more you turn that corkscrew the deeper it goes, the more granular things get. And you realize that the more you see the less you know. It’s infinite.
Don’t try to understand this beautiful mystery. Experience it.
That is what it is meant for.
