It was a very long time ago. I am not sure how old I was. The stamp collections started probably when I was around 12ish in age. And I am not sure how the idea was born but I have a hunch it came either from boy scouts or the magazine Boys Life.
But I was bitten by the bug and I remember very clearly the day my mother and I went to a local stamp store and we bought me a beautiful stamp album. My collection had begun.
Those were some wonderful years for me, pre-teen and teen years. And I treasured that stamp collection. I spent many many hours with it. And I regularly bought stamps to put into it. I also bought other things including first day covers and blocks of four stamps. Yup, good times.
State Flags Collectible Stamp Sheet
And I will never forget the day I walked down to the city post office and asked the clerk tentatively for a sheet of 50 state stamps. I was a very bashful teen and it took a lot for me to do that but I walked home with that sheet of stamps in my school notebook.
Well... the years pass and time catches up. That stamp collection made its way out of my life due to circumstances that I couldn't control. But all these years it was in the back of my mind that I would start up again.
And I have.... Just a couple of months ago I purchased a three volume stamp album from amazon.com (Mystic's 3-volume American Heirloom Stamp Album with 200 Free U.S. Stamps and 1,000 Hinges ) I figured it was a good place to start.
My collection in those days was world wide and I loved it. Many countries issue lots of beautiful and interesting stamps. But this new collection will be mostly U.S. stamps with some variations that interest me like castle stamps, astronomy stamps, bonsai stamps etc.
So it is the now and it took me forty years to finally start again. But I have and it feels quite wonderful. The first night I sat down with the new collection I was overwhelmed by memories. Many of these stamps I knew very well. I recognized them. I could feel them. Funny how time is.
It is a wonderful feeling to return to the collecting of stamps.
