White Sands is quite a remarkable and unusual place. And for me it was a bit uncanny.

I am a New Englander so I am used to having snow on the roads several months out of the year.

And I couldn't shake the feeling, as I was driving on the white sands that it was snow!

White Sands (The Alkali Flats) is an enormous strech of land. What they have is a section of it for visiting. You stop at the visitor center which has all the usual visitor center stuff. Then you can drive about a five mile section into the white sands, then drive back. And, you can stop at various parking spots and picnic areas along the way to hike and more.

Just about everywhere you can walk up and into the sands. It is kind of cool.

This next picture gives you the feeling of a snow plowed road. You just drive right on that road. There isn't any road. They just plow out a road right on the white sands.

A big thing about White Sands that I really like is the nature. I don't have to tell you that even though it seems like an inhospitable place it is quite alive with all kinds of plants and animals. There are lots of placards, signs and descriptive posters that will point things out for you.
