68 year old bottles of Gulval Mead! OMG!!

I got an email from a gentleman called Asim. And he was wondering if I could shed some light on these 72 year old bottles of mead.

I can't offer much help. But maybe you know something about this mead and can help. Or maybe you are a collector of mead and want these bottles! Either way send me an email:

I would love to hear any insights!

Note: I got an email from Jonathan who lends some insight into this mead. That is at the bottom of this page.

There are three bottles of this mead and lets take a look at them:

Gulval Mead

Gulval Metheglin

Gulval Mead

Gulval Hippocras'

I received another email from a web visitor (Meo). Who has lent some wonderful insight into this mead. Here is what he has to say:

I just want to add some quick insights into your 64 Years old Bottles.

Both of your Informations could be absolutely right. All these Bottles could have been made by the English mead maker and mead historian Lt. Colonel Robert Gayre. As you noted by the Labels, the meads were all made at The Mead House by Meadmakers Ltd., in Gulval, Cornwall located in the southwest of England. Gayre worked there to my knowledge.

Lt. Colonel Robert Gayre passed away in 1996 so i would recommend to search for his last Bottles. Or contact his Son (which lives at castle Minard http://www.minardcastle.com/ )

A quite interesting find could also be this fine Newspaper-article

And the last comment at http://www.examiner.com/article/the-mystery-of-bochet-tasting-60-year-old-mead you can read that the Honey should have been Australian, but I would recommend asking the person in question yourself.

Note: I got an email from Jonathan who lends some wonderful insight into this mead. Here is what he has to say:

I was checking out bee boles and one thing led to another.  Anyway, I think that the 64 year old mead pictured on your site is from the Gulval Mead House, Gulval Mead, Penzance, Cornwall.

Still other searches suggest that the mead was made by Lt. Col. Robert Gayre. http://www.examiner.com/article/the-mystery-of-bochet-tasting-60-year-old-mead

Watch a video!!! I got an email from a web visitor (Paul) who discovered a video while researching beekeeping in England. This is a terrific video on making mead. It was shot in 1949. If you are a fan of mead you have to watch this video. And .... it takes place in Gulval where they made the mead I show you on this page:
