Make Sure you Monitor your website traffic

One of the most important things you, as a webmaster, should do is to monitor your web traffic. You have to know where they are coming from and where they are going on your website. You can significantly increase your revenue if you understand these user habits.

Where are you visitors coming from and why?

This is very important. As you build traffic and you write articles and get more links out there on the web you need to know what is working and what is not working. If you have some kind of a tracking program you can see what works and improve it. You can also see what doesn't work and change it or drop it. Don't waste your time on stuff that doesn't work!

How long do your visitors stay and what pages do they view?

Of course this is very important. As your website grows you will have hundreds, even thousands of pages. What pages do they visit and where do they come from on your site? Do you have a page that you think is very valuable to your user yet never visitied? This might be because of the link text you have referring to it. A statistics program can help you with this.

A statistics tracking program is invaluable to your growth on the web. It can supply you with invaluable information that will help you improve your traffic, understand what your web visitor is looking for and it can help you make more money!

Here are three Statistics Programs that I use

For Absolute Beginners:

StatCounter

If all this website stuff is new to you and you don't know much about designing websites you should start out with the Statcounter program. It is a real easy program where you just insert some code into your website and you are done. Then you log into their website and check your statistics. They have two levels of service. The first level is totally free and it gives you lots of options to track your visitors but is limited to 100 pages of counting. But you can get a lot more than this just by assigning sections of your website as projects and each project has 100 page limit. This is a great service. http://www.statcounter.com You just paste some code into your pages or templates and you are done.

Beginner/Intermediate:

Google Analytics

This is a great tool for analyzing traffic on your site and it is a little bit harder than the statcounter program but it gives you a lot more information. It works similiar to statcounter in that you paste a piece of code into your webpages or templates and you are done. If you are working with adsense or adwords you really should sign up for this free tool. It has some nice tie-ins with adsense/adwords. It is totally free but it has some kind of outrageous page view limit like a million hits a day so nothing to worry about there. If you are doing a million hits a day let's exchange links !

Advanced Webmaster:

AWStats

This is the best free program you can get to analyze statistics for your website. But this is not for beginners. You have to upload the program to your server and make some small modifications depending on where you load it. You may also have to create or modify your .htaccess file and that may sound scary but it isn't that hard. If you have some computer savvy you should give AWstats a try. It will give you exceptionally valuable information about traffic to your website.
