Glen Eyrie Castle

This is a castle with an interesting history. The man and family that built it have been the subjects of several books. I have the books (Available on Amazon) listed below.

It is built English Tudor Style and was built in 1871. Now it is a conference center and hotel.

And one of the things that makes this castle really special is the beautifully manicured grounds and the colorado red rock backdrop.

A Kingdom of Their Own: The Story of the Palmers of Glen Eyrie

A vividly written biography of one of Colorado's first families. General Palmer, founder of Colorado Springs and the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, is well known to Coloradans. But lesser known and just as compelling in many ways, are his wife Queen and their daughters, who inhabited one of the great houses in the West, Glen Eyrie. Almost like a fairy tale in its conception, their relationship was a fascinating blend of frontier challenges and gracious living amid the Wild West of the 1870s and '80s. It's the Downton Abbey of the West, with a strong central character (General Palmer) surrounded by a loyal but headstrong wife and growing daughters.

Queen of Glen Eyrie Wife of General William Palmer: The Woman Who Inspired a Castle

Nicknamed Queen at a young age, Mary Lincoln Mellen met General William Palmer when she was nineteen years old. He would later write that it was love at first sight. Rumors abound about the nature of Queen's relationship with her husband and the reason she left Glen Eyrie. Carefully researched and documented, Queen of Glen Eyrie recaptures the life and personality of the castle's first lady. Share her letters and pictures and see how a rugged Colorado frontier town-and its founder-was changed by the spirit of a queen.

The Man on the Iron Horse

A small book telling the story of General Palmer: In 1871, William Jackson Palmer, a Delaware Quaker, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and a Civil War General, brought the steam locomotive (the Iron Horse) across country with his Denver and Rio Grande Railway Company, and he was often referred to as the Man on the Iron Horse. His goal was to build a City with a healthy quality of life, and he bought land just south of Denver at the base of Pikes Peak.
