It's more a palace than a castle. And it reminds me of the Great Gatsby which takes place in 1925. And construction began on Hearst Castle in 1919 so there is a time period similarity although the Great Gatsby takes place in New York and Hearst Castle is located in California. |
You arrive at the visitor center where there are displays, presentations, and places to eat. From there you can't go to the castle on your own. You get on a bus that leaves regularly. You take a drive up to the castle on Hearst property and it is about a five mile drive. Here is a lookk at the castle from one of the windows in the visitor center. The Castle. It is designed in Mediterranean Revival style and it definitely has the flair and feel of a spanish cathedral. This outdoor swimming pool is one of the major highlights of the grounds outside.
And this indoor swimming pool with its gold trim and detail work is one of the more iconic things from the castle, the time period and the wealth of the Hearsts.
