I only drove through the Mojave Desert. And I stopped at a popular rest stop to look around and get some pictures. I would imagine there are hiking trails and ways to explore the desert but I didn't. Enjoyed my short stay nonetheless. I also have a driving through the Mojave desert Youtube video here if you would like to experience a bit of that. |
It is located in California roughly at the midway point between Los Angeles and Las Vegas Nevada. Just at the beginning of the Mojave desert on the western edge is a small incorporated community named Zzyzx. I should have driven down that road to see what is down there but I continued on into the desert. More about Zzyzx on a wikipedia page here

Desert Oracle: Volume 1: Strange True Tales from the American Southwest Straight out of Joshua Tree, California, Desert Oracle is The Voice of the Desert: a field guide to the strange tales, singing sand dunes, sagebrush trails, artists and aliens, authors and oddballs, ghost towns and modern legends, musicians and mystics, scorpions and saguaros, out there in the sand. Desert Oracle is your companion at a roadside diner, around a campfire, in your tent or cabin (or high-rise apartment or suburban living room) as the wind and the coyotes howl outside at night. A Natural History of the Mojave Desert A Natural History of the Mojave Desert explores how a combination of complex geology, varied geography, and changing climate has given rise to intriguing flora and faunaincluding almost 3,000 plant species and about 380 terrestrial vertebrate animal species. Of these, one quarter of the plants and one sixth of the animals are endemic.
