I only drove through the Mojave Desert. And I stopped at a popular rest stop to look around and get some pictures. I would imagine there are hiking trails and ways to explore the desert but I didn't. Enjoyed my short stay nonetheless.

It is located in California roughly at the midway point between Los Angeles and Las Vegas Nevada.

Just at the beginning of the Mojave desert on the western edge is a small incorporated community named Zzyzx. I should have driven down that road to see what is down there but I continued on into the desert. More about Zzyzx on a wikipedia page here
