It is called a castle but it really is a very big mansion.... although. The accepted thing that makes something a castle is that it is fortified for defense against attack.

And I guess you could say that in a weird way this building is fortified for defense, just not against normal attacks but against spiritual attacks.

The plaque mounted outside the building calls this the Winchester Mystery House. And I guess that's a pretty good definition.

They signed a contract with the movie company that no pictures were allowed inside the castle by visitors and fans. Darn shame! But, I had to respect that rule. They have one room inside the castle that is set up for allowing pictures so I got some pictures in that room and I have plenty of pictures outside the castle.

One last thought I have about this building is that they made a big deal out of the seance room. And seeing as everything in this building was built to deceive and confuse spirits I got the peculiar feeling that the seance room was also a deception. I don't think that room was the "actual" seance room. It would make sense.
