Santiago de Compostela

The city name of "Santiago de Compostela" means "St. James of the Field of Stars".

There are a couple of stories as to why this name came about.

One story is that a bright star appeared over the field where the tomb of St. James was found.

Another story is that a hermit living in the woods saw a field full of stars one night.

Either way a whole thing became of this including affirmation by the church as this being a holy place. A cathedral was built and now, for the past 1400 years pilgrims have been making the journey to visit this cathedral on the western edge of Spain. And for many centuries they came from all over Europe. Today people come from all over the world to start their pilgrimage somewhere in Europe (Often the start is at St. Jean Pied de Port in France) and to end here in Santiago.

This next picture is not an actual photo. But it is a composite of two photos that I have taken. The cathedral is a picture that I took in Santiago. And the starry sky is an actual picture I took of the milky way while I lived in Phoenix Arizona. I just thought it would be nice to create it.

At the top of the cathedral is a statue of Saint James.

Here is a short video at the cathedral with bagpipes playing:

This is the stone tunnel that you pass through and finish your pilgrimage. You enter into the courtyard of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
