Mason Jars and Mead

James (an expert in Mead making) has some really neat and creative tips when it comes to using mason jars along with mead making.

Making Jack

Making Jack is a way to boost up the alcohol content of your mead. So if you have a batch that is a bit low on the alcohol here is a suggestion on what you can do.

Fill a mason jar about 85% full then place it in the freezer. Once the first layer of ice forms take the jar out of the freezer and remove then discard the ice. The alcohol won't free so you end up with less liquid which means a higher alcohol percentage.

Freeze Filtering

To freeze-filter, use a freezer-friendly mason jar, fill it up most but not all (85%) of the way, let it sit and settle up-side-down, CAREFULLY carry it to the freezer, let it freeze... when that's done, take off the lid, scrape off the yeast/sediment, and then let it melt.  Very doable for small amounts of mead, say a few bottles before a picnic, and it will be cold later after melting, which is a nice touch.

Note: It is important to remember that you cannot do either of these processes with a mead that is still fermenting. It can be dangerous and cause the jars to crack or even explode. This can only be done with still mead and with mason jars that are freezer friendly.
