Some Guidelines from Will about Chainmail If you are thinking about purchasing chainmail you might be confused by some of the terms. I can help. First off if you see the term "butted" chainmail that means that the ends of the rings have been butted together. This is a good technique, it makes for easier chainmail to make and it makes for a more economically priced item. This butted is in comparison to another technique for making rings. This other technique is riveted. This is where every ring is actually closed with a rivet. Riveted makes for a much more sturdy chainmail but it is quite a bit more expensive. Gauge: Another term you are going to run into is the gauge of the wire that the chainmail is made out of. It is easy to understand. The higher the number the thinner the wire. So, two common sizes of wire for chainmail are 16 and 18 gauge. And it is important to know that the 16 gauge is the thicker of the two. The thicker the gauge wire the stronger the chainmail, but also the heavier the chainmail. Steel or Aluminum? -Steel is of course more durable and more expensive. Aluminum the more economical choice, and aluminum generally looks better in terms of shiny and bright. And of course steel is much heavier. The choice is yours. And steel, unless coated with something will actually rust. It does need oiling as maintenance. A typical coating for steel chainmail is zinc. That is pretty common.
This is a tutorial that shows you step-by-step how to make chain mail. I show you which wire to use, how to create the rings and how to weave the actual mail. How to make chainmail. I will also be doing a tutorial on how to make a piece of chainmail armor.
