Architecure of buildings, particularly in the gothic tradition will have various figures and faces carved right into the structure. These are often either gargoyles or grotesques. |
One of the most recognizable type of these figures is the gargoyle. They are easy to identify and they serve the function of channeling and controlling rain water. Typically the rain spouts right out of the gargoyles mouth. Another type of figure is the "Grotesque" and these are self explanatory. They are distorted and grotesque faces and figures. The figures on the front of St. Dunstan's Basilica don't fit into either of these categories. If there is an identifying name for this type of sculpture I am unaware of it. Let's just call the "traurigs". Because they seem to have a bit of sadness to them. And "traurig" is the german word for sad or sorrowful.
