Before I tell you about the piece of art I purchased on the cruise ship I want to tell you another story. The two stories are intimately related. |
Years ago I had the potential opportunity to bid, at auction on an authentic medieval stained glass window. It was a small one, of a medieval knight, in armor, kneeling and praying. I didn't buy it and to this day I regret it. There is an interesting story behind that stained glass window and you can read that story here. So, while I was on my first and only cruise ship I attended an art auction. It seems to be a bit of a fancy thing but I went to the auction just for the experience. And I had no intention of actually buying anything. Anyway, during the auction they brought out maybe around thirty works of art. It all was very nice. But they unveiled one piece that really struck me. It simply spoke to me. You can see it here on the left, on a stand. It is a very simple piece of art and it is entitled "Dans l'Or Du Couchant" (In the gold of the sunset). And the artist, who has now passed away is Emile Bellet. The work simply stuck with me. For the rest of the day I couldn't stop thinking about it. And while lying in bed that knight I still couldn't stop thinking about it. And I wondered "Is this another case of the Stained Glass Knight that I didn't purchase and now regret?" Well, it didn't sell at auction. And the following morning I went down to the art gallery and talked to someone about it. And I bought it. Simple as that. And I am so happy about it. The work can forever be a symbol of the cruise I took. And it feels very fitting. It is a woman in a red dress standing under a beautiful sunset. And she could be leaning against the railing of a cruise ship. You can't go back in time and correct the opportunities you missed but you can use those regrets to modify what you do in the present and in the future. This is the only piece of "art" that I possess. And I am very proud of it. Here is a closer look:
