Diorama Kits

Diorama making is a fun and rewarding pursuit and you have a lot of different options when it comes to making them. One of the best ways to make a diorama is to purchase a kit. And the kits come in a very wide variety of types. There are several different flavors of kits that I will show you. The type you choose will depend of what kind of diorama you want and what you want it to look like.

 

Scene-A-Rama: this is a series of excellent dioramas made by a company called Woodland Scenics. They focus on making very realistic terrain such as forests, rivers, trees, mountains and other natural elements like that. They have been a favorite of the Model Railroader for many decades now. These projects are really nice.

Basic Scene Making Kit

Scene-A-Rama Basic Diorama Kit - This is a nice introductory kit to diorama making you get a good set of basic materials. Use this kit to create a flat, landscaped surface for your project. It includes everything you need to make plains, prairies, grasslands, farmlands, woods and meadows.

 

Scene a Rama Water Kit

Scene-A-Rama Water Diorama Kit - Water is one of the best looking things you can add to a diorama. This kit gives you everything you need. Use this kit to create water areas for your diorama. It includes everything you need to make waterfalls, ponds, rivers, rapids, oceans, waves, or anywhere water is your main focus.

Suggested tools for building: scissors, masking tape, paper cup, hobby knife, newspapers, wax paper and a bowl for water.

The Scenery Kit

Tatebanko Paper Diorama Kits

Japanese tatebanko

Japanese Art Paper Diorama Kit: Lake View An ancient paper craft is revived and updated with these kits. Tatebanko is the Japanese art of creating beautiful scenic perspectives in the form of paper dioramas. This art form popular and widely admired from the 17th century (Edo period) to the early 20th century nearly disappeared. The kits pay homage to famed Edo artist Hiroshige who created a series of 53 paintings after a long journey. One scene in the series is a view of Lake Ashi and nearby mountains, including snow-capped Mt. Fuji.

Hokusai's famous work The Great Wave off Kanagawa from the series "36 Scenes of Mt. Fuji" is reproduced in this diorama.

Evening Snow dramatically conveys the silence of a wintery scene at a village that had not seen snow for years. The mystery is that Hiroshige visited in summer.
