The Sardine Box Diorama Part 4: The Water and Waterfall

This is a really fun part of the process of making a diorama. The kit comes with two different products for making water effects.

The first product is called realistic water and it is a pourable gel like fluid. You pour it on any flat surface to a thin depth of less than an 1/8 inch. It will harden to look like water. It's pretty neat.

The second product is called Water Effects and it is thicker, about like pudding. You brush it on and it will hold good thickness. With this make the waterfall and ripples on the water.

With the realistic water you create bodies of water by pouring it on and letting it spread out. You can also brush it around to even it and fill in various areas. It will take several hours to dry so you have time to work it.

I did the lake and the river that feeds the waterfall.

Next we create the waterfall using the water effects.

Measure the size of waterfall you need and add a little bit to that size. Then cut a piece of paper or cardboard to act as a template.

Lay this template on the included piece of coated paper that comes with the kit.

Then using a toothpick spread out the water effects in long lines that look like a waterfall.

Use the cardboard template as a guide for how large to make the waterfall.

Let it dry.

Then you can peel it off the paper and trim it. Then apply it to your diorama. It is soft and rubbery so you can shape it any way you like. Put a curve in it so it looks like a waterfall.

Dabble on the water effects paste to secure it in place and to touch it up so it looks good. This includes dabbling some on the water body around the waterfall to simulate rippling and bubbling water.

Finish the waterfall by painting blue on it. And then coating it with the liquid water effects. That will give it a nice shiny look.

Okay! Let's finish the diorama by adding the fishermen and the billboard - Continue

Realistic Water

This is the stuff that you pour into the diorama to create the lake. This 16 oz bottle gives you a whole lot of water to work with.

Water Effects

This is the thicker material. You use this to make the waterfall and to make waves and ripples on the flat water surfaces. It has tact and stands up. It has a consistency to pudding.
