Books about and by Famous Fantasy artists

If you like to draw fantasy art or you are a fantasy artist chances are good you are familiar with these artists. They have created and changed the fantasy art world.

I have chosen four of the best and their work is quite varied. There are very few fantasy artists at this level.

Frank Frazetta

Legacy: Paintings and Drawings by Frank Frazetta

Frank Frazetta's paintings and illustrations have set the standard for fantasy artists for the past 50 years. This collection focuses on his influence in a variety of media and genres and on his place in 20th century art history. Coedited by Hugo Award-winning editor Arnie Fenner, it includes many of Frazetta's most memorable paintings as well as revised works. The art is accompanied by the artist's own observations and commentary by a number of his contemporaries.

Testament: The Life and Art of Frank Frazetta

This final entry in Arnie and Cathy Fenner's Frazetta trilogy features 150 full-color paintings by the renowned artist and illustrator, ranging in subject matter from barbarian battles to erotica to religious art, as well as photos from his personal archives, including shots of George Lucas visiting the Frazetta estate and Bo Derek posing for one of his alluring femme fatales. Comments and anecdotes by the artist and the editors, along with testimonials from graphic-art luminaries Dave Stevens, Bruce Timm, and Bernie Wrightson, flesh out this portrait of the artist.

Spectrum Presents: Frank Frazetta: Rough Work

Frank Frazetta has excelled in a wide variety of artistic formats, from fine art to paperback covers, comic books to record albums. His atmospheric worlds of sinewy superheroes, seductive sirens, and vivid monsters are wonderfully detailed, fully realized, and unmistakably his. This book gives fans an intimate glimpse of Frazetta's creative process by showcasing not only black-and-white and full-color drawings from his sketchbooks, but concept art as well, showing the artist's raw imagination and problem-solving skills. Printed on deluxe art paper and featuring personal and previously unpublished material, these "rough works" offer a fascinating look at how a modern master creates.

Boris Vallejo

Dreams: The Art of Boris Vallejo

This lavish portfolio by best-selling fantasy artist Boris Vallejo, published for the first time in book form in the Fall of 1999, now comes to us in trade paper. Vallejo's style is infinitely flexible and his choice of subjects encompasses scenes from Greek mythology, prehistoric creatures and serene ocean life. Stunning winged women, muscled men fighting ferocious beasts and strange alien worlds are among the many fantastic visions Vallejo creates for us. This collection includes a selection of Vallejo's private work - sensuous full-color paintings that bring exotic women, sinewy men, and dream worlds to life. All told it includes over 120 full-color paintings, never before shown together. Renowned fantasy author Nigel Suckling offers insight into Vallejo's art with fascinating and informative extended captions.

Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell: The Ultimate Collection

The art of Boris Vallejo is characterized by beautiful maidens, heroic men and fearsome monsters while the work of his wife Julie Bell is famous for a sense of color and dramatic composition which puts her paintings in a class by themselves.

As two of the most acclaimed fantasy artists working today, Boris and Julie have produced art for album covers, trading cards, posters and calendars for (in Boris' case) 30 years -- and have seen 15 books published celebrating their breathtaking work.

Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell: The Ultimate Collection brings together all their greatest pieces throughout their careers, while also including some unseen new work. The book is arranged chronologically and divided into three main sections: early, middle and recent art. A narrative accompanies the paintings with captions for many of the pieces. The pages are also punctuated by quotes from Boris and Julie's peers in the fantasy art field and fans of their work, who pay homage to their art and comment on how their work has inspired them to become better artists.

Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell: The Ultimate Illustrations

As two of the most acclaimed fantasy artists working today, Boris and Julie have produced art for book covers, album covers, trading cards, posters, and calendars (in Boris' case) for over 30 years-and have seen 15 books published celebrating their breathtaking work.

Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell: The Ultimate Illustrations is the newest must-have book for Boris and Julie fans. Ultimate Illustrations presents the first collection of their sketches in over 15 year and features 100 previously unpublished illustrations. Drawings range from delicate fantasy art to bold covers and album designs. All pieces are stunning works of art in their own right, inspirational to fantasy aficionados and artists, and invaluable additions to all Boris and Julie collectors' portfolios.

Fantasy Workshop: A Practical Guide

From initial concept through to finishing touches, for the first time, Boris and Julie give an in-depth description of how they paint their masterpieces, taking the reader through every stage of the creative process. As well as teaching the main techniques, the premiere fantasy-art team shows the reader how to use a wide variety of media to create a whole range of different types of painting, and explain how they create the effects for which they are so renowned, such as Julie's legendary "metal flesh," with its mix of fluidity and hardness contrasting with the sensual softness of the skin. Illustrated throughout in full color, the Practical Guide to Fantasy Art includes step-by-step photographs that Boris and Julie have taken as they've worked as well as a selection of their finished art appealing to art students and fantasy-art admirers alike.

H.R. Giger

H. R. Giger's Necronomicon

H.R. GIGER'S NECRONOMICON: A startling milestone on the darkly lit road once traveled by the likes of Bosch, Brueghel, Lovecraft, Poe and Kafka. Giger's remarkable book of the dead gives us some of the most powerful images ever an artist drew from the well of the imagination.

Giger's Alien

A complete record of the months of work that went into the design of the alien in the popular film. The book is written by the horror designer himself and illustrated throughout in integrated full colour with sketches, original paintings, photographs and scenes from the film.

H. R. Giger's Necronomicon II

Only once in a great while comes an artist with a completely new vision of the world. An ability to perceive things in a truly revolutionary manner. A talent to communicate through imagery so unique and provocative that it simply cannot be ignored. H.R. Giger is one such artist.

BROM

Darkwerks: The Art of Brom

One of this generation's most popular cult fantasy artists, Brom has a distinctive and disturbing vision. 150 full-color reproductions offer a glimpse into the mind of this dark master whose work has enhanced books, comics, games, and videos, ranging from Dungeons & Dragons to Doom II. Among the material included are unpublished early works; covers such as the deeply unsettling Fire Clown and horror-filled Rat's Den ; and trading cards in a variety of genres, including the collectible Dark Age

The Plucker: An Illustrated Novel by Brom

The Plucker , now updated with new art and an afterword from world-renowned dark fantasy artist Brom, is a window into a world where fairy-tale tradition collides with vileness and depravity, love and heroism, suffering and sacrifice. In this shadowy land of make-believe, Jack and his box are stuck beneath the bed with the dust, spiders, and other castaway toys, and forced to face a bitter truth: Children grow up, and toys are left behind. Jack thinks this is the worst fate that can befall a toy. But when the Plucker, a malevolent spirit, is set loose upon the world of make-believe, Jack is thrust into the unlikely role of defending Thomas, the very child who abandoned him, and learns that there are worse ends for a toy than abandonment. As desperation mounts, Jack is thrown together with Thomas's other toys-Monkey, the Nutcracker, and the ethereally beautiful porcelain doll Snow Angel-as they struggle to rise above their simple roles as playthings and save the boy they love.
