Mead Review: Sky River Mead (Semi-Sweet)

I ran down to my local Total Wine here in Phoenix to see if they carried any mead. This is because I was writing an article about how you can find mead near you. (You can read that article here) . Well, anyway I picked up this bottle of Sky River Mead.

Sky River Mead

I didn't expect to see any Sky River Mead because I don't think they are a big company. (I could be mistaken about that.)

Total Wine had it in their dessert wine section. I am not sure if Sky River considers this a dessert wine but if you compare it to grape wines I would imagine that would be a fair categorization.

And the overall wine industry may be wondering how to categorize mead. It is quite unique so they may be putting it in the dessert wine section. But it does make a certain amount of sense. Within the mead world I wouldn't consider this a dessert mead but within the overall wine world that is a fair assessment.

Anyway, let's taste it.

It pours well and has a good thickness to it -which I always like.

It is very light in color which is nice, but surprising when you taste it. There is a lot of depth and complexity to this mead.

I expected a pretty basic mead but I was mistaken. There are a lot of hints of flavors in this mead.

And there is a suprisingly good honey sweetness to it. Not a sugary sweetness but a honey sweetness. I have to give Sky River credit for coaxing out that sweetness.

I don't know where they are getting their honey but it is top notch. And I found myself wondering if they hint this mead with something or if they are aging it in wooden barrels but it does have an excellent complexity to it.

When it comes to meads this one is top-notch. If you are an absolute beginner to mead, or if you have never tried it then I recommend you try this one. You can't go wrong. It will give you a really good representation of what mead is. And it goes a little bit further by giving you rich hints of flavors.

You can learn more about Sky River Mead by visiting their website here: Sky River Mead . They currently have ten different meads available and ship to 38 different states.
