This is a fun project. It is the sword from the Zelda video games. And you only need a few supplies to make it. The whole thing is pretty much just one sheet of foam board. The only additional things you will need are a paper towel tube for the handle and some wire to get the grips on the handle. I also wrapped the handle in blue electrical tape which is the best thing to do. If you paint the handle some of the paint may rub off on your hands. So, be sure to use a non-toxic latex paint on the handle if you don't use tape. To do this project I have put together a pdf with all the templates. Print up the pdf, cut out the piece and tape them together. The PDF is right here (3.7 Meg) I also have a project where you can make the Zelda Hylian Shield. |
I took a lot of time to make sure this sword looked pretty good yet was easy to make. And it requires a minimum of materials (1 piece of foam board). But you have to print out the packet and put some of the pages together then transfer these patterns over to the foam board. I will show you how to do all this. Can you make this sword? You sure can. Here is a picture of one made by Thomas. My thanks to him for sending in this picture!!
What you need to make this project:
Once you have printed out the packet and taped together the various pieces you lay them onto your foam board or cardboard and trace them. The picture here shows one piece on the foamboard. It is a bit difficult to see in the picture.
Once you have all the pieces traced you can go ahead and cut them all out like I am doing in this picture here.
Take your two handle pieces, put them together and slide the paper towel tube right over the handle. Now stuff the paper towel tube tight with paper towels. This will make the handle strong. It won't collapse because of you holding it.
Now insert the blade right between the two handle pieces. Push it all the way down so it is flush right up against the paper towel tube. Now you can glue all this together. Now it's a matter of gluing the remaining pieces. There are Five individual pieces and the two part assembly that makes up the butt of the sword handle.
One remaining thing to do is put the ridge grips on the handle. You can use rubber or plastic tubing or wire. Something about the thickness of a straw is pretty good. Wrap it one full wrap around the handle. And repeat this every two inches up the handle. Glue these down or tape over them to hold them in place. I used a blue electrical tape on this whole handle which looks pretty good and works real easy. if you don't have blue electrical tape you can use a glue gun to glue these ridges down then you can paint the handle along with the rest of the sword.
The only thing remaining is to paint it. I painted the blade silver, the blade guards purple and the center section between them a gray color. I also painted the butt of the sword handle purple. The handle is unpainted because that is blue electrical tape. Don't forget to paint the little ornament gold.
