Who doesn't love Zelda? It is one of those games that stands as an icon within the video game industry. And the zelda sword and shield are also iconic in the game world. In this tutorial I show you how to make a nice zelda hylian shield. All you need is a couple of pieces of cardboard and some paint. This is the second part of my zelda projects. I have also done the zelda sword. You can check that project out here: Make The Zelda Sword I also have a video of this tutorial at the bottom of this page. And the nine patterns on the shield can be a little bit tricky to make. I have a pdf that you can dowload and print to get them the way I have them: Hylian shield Patterns |
Here is the completed shield.
Can you make this Hylian Shield? You sure can. The one on the left was made by Thomas. My thanks to him for sending in the pic!! And the one on the right was made by Carolina. My thanks to her too!
This is an optional step but it does make the work a little bit easier. I first drew out the shield on a big piece of poster board. You use this as a template. It won't be hard to draw. The trickiest part is to make it nice and symmetrical. The shield is 22 inches wide and 26 inches tall.
Trace that template onto cardboard and make two of them. You can also use foamboard if you don't have any cardboard.
Now cut out the two cardboard shapes. One of them will stay pretty much like you see. That is the actual shield. On the other one we will draw out all the shapes then cut them out so they can be glued onto the shield.
The picture shows you the shapes to draw on the shield and then cut them all out. The border all the way around the edge is about two inches thick.
Once you have all those pieces cut out you can put them on the blank shield just to see how everything looks. Don't glue anything down yet.
Now lets do something to get the curve in the shield. This is optional and you can leave your shield flat but it looks a lot better with a slight curve in it. I used a piece of cardboard and a hot glue gun to do this. Cut yourself a piece of rectangular cardboard as shown, there are also flaps underneath that are difficult to see. The rectangle is folded so there are two flaps underneath. Glue one of the flaps to the shield, pull the shield a little bit so it is curved then glue the other flap down. If you use glue gun it will hold in place after a couple of seconds. But if you are using a gluegun you may have to tape it all in position while it dries.
Now add some handles with a couple of pieces of rope and electrical tape. If you don't have these materials you can improvise something. Even a couple of pieces of cardboard as handles would work well.
Now paint everything up. The basic shield is blue as shown here in the picture. You will also use red, silver, and yellow.I used a paint called H20 Latex paint by krylon. It is very low odor and latex so pretty safe.
This picture shows the colors to paint the various pieces. Yellow, red and silver are what you need. And now your shield is complete! Congratulations.
This is the video on how to make this shield. MORE PROJECTS AND STUFF
