This is a fun project and it is pretty easy to make. Probably only take you about an hour. And the big thing that you need is just one sheet of foam board. You could do this with regular corrugated cardboard too. It is the Uruk-hai chopper sword from the Lord of the Rings movies. The interesting thing about this sword is the scary looking spike on the end. While this is a movie sword that kind of spike was actually seen on some bladed weapons in history. It was useful for piercing armor but it was most effective as a hooking and pulling tool. You could grab an opponents weapon or a part of the opponent and pull. I also have a video on how to make this sword. It is at the bottom of the page. |
Can you make one of these? You sure can. Here is one made by Thomas. My thanks to him for sending in this pic! And here is one made by Mitchell
And here is one made by Louis! Thanks Louis!
And here is one made by Patrick. He even made a stand for it!
There is a three page template that you download, cut out and put together. The Downloadable Template for this sword is here. This is what it looks like. Just put this on your sheet of foam board and trace it. Trace three of them.
Cut out the three blade pieces as you can see in this picture. And glue them all together like a sandwich. I used plain old elmers white glue. And I added a little bit of water to it. With the water it makes it real easy to brush on. Put a couple of books on it to hold it down while the glue is drying.
Once the sword has dried you can shape it and clean it up a bit with sandpaper, files or a hobby knife. Once this is done you can paint it. I used a rustoleum silver spray paint. It gives a nice metallic look.
Once the paint has dried you can wrap the handle. You can use plain electrical tape or if you have some vinyl you can use that.
Overall Length: 31 15/16 inches Blade Length: 24 3/4 inches Blade Thickness: 3/16 inch Blade Material: Full tang high carbon steel, battle worn and tarnished finish, false-edged Hand Grip: Hardwood, genuine leather wrap Plaque: 13 1/8 inches x 12 3/8 inches x 3/4 inch wood, adorned with the hand of Saruman icon.
Elmer's Guide-Line Foam Board 20 Inches x 30 Inches, White, 2 Foam Boards per pack I love elmers foam board, and this has light grid lines on it .
