This project started with an accident. Let me explain. |
I was working on another project (Paper Making). And under the project I had a sheet of foam board because it makes for a clean and clear video back drop. Well, I spilled a very large container of water all over the foamboard. About a quart of water. I rushed into the kitchen looking for paper towels and the rack was empty. Then I went into the bathroom and got a towel. By the time I sopped up the water on the foamboard it was pretty much soaked through the top layer of paper. I pushed the foam board onto another table and got myself a clean (and dry) sheet of foamboard so I could continue with the project I was working on. And I thought no more of the water accident. Until the next morning. I got up and walked over into the office where to my surprise that soaked sheet of foamboard was nicely curved. And I mean nicely curved. It wasn't wrinkled. It didn't have a ruined look. It looked good. And the curve was wonderfully uniform. And it had the appearance of a curved shield! And that was it! The wheels were turning. I could curve foam board and I probably could control the curve nicely. And it would look really nice and smooth. And two curved shield projects were born of this accident :) And now I am wondering if there is a way to do a round buckler that curves in the middle. Hmmm..... Make a Roman Scutum Here is another curved foam board project. Interesting process for easily getting a beautifully curved shield. This is an easy project that looks great. And a terrific companion to my Roman Gladius sword project. Make a Roman Scutum.
Make the Elven Shield from Lord of the Rings This is an easy to make project. The shield itself is just one sheet of foamboard. And I show you a neat technique for curving it!
