Dragon Fruit

This is an interesting fruit and it's real name is "Pitaya" but it is commonly known as the dragon fruit or the strawberry pear. It grows from several different varieties of cactus and is indigenous to the southern regions of Mexico and the Pacific coasts of many south American countries. It is cultivated in many tropical and sub-tropical areas including Asia, America, the Caribbean, Australia, Brazil and Portugal.

This is a very peculiar looking fruit and it definitely is named correctly because it does have a bit of a dragonskin look to it.

It cost me $3.99 which seems a bit expensive but who knows how far it has to travel to get to my local supermarket!

It is an exotic fruit but it isn't exotic in flavor. It has a very mild flavor and texture and I would compare it to a mix between a kiwi and a pear - with the texture being very "kiwi".

And about all those little seeds. There are a lot of them but when you eat it they are almost indetectible.

It is an easy fruit to prepare. I have pictures for you.

You slice it into quarters length-wise and then you can easily just bend the skin and peel out the fruit. (You don't eat the skin).
