It is a small fruit - about the size of a plum that is native to the sub-tropical regions of South America.

The name might lead you to believe that is has some sort of aphrodisiac effect but actually that is not where the name comes from. It was named passion fruit by 18th century Christian Missionaries because the blossom of the fruit was interpreted as a religious symbol.

I paid $3.49 for this passion fruit in my local grocery store.

Will's Review: It's a tart fruit and the seeds definitely have a presence but are fully edible. And there is definitely a jelly-like texture to it.

You can cut it any way you prefer but a common method is to cut off the top third of the passion fruit then use a scoop to scoop out the meat of the fruit. Kind of like the way you would scoop out yoplait yogurt.
