How to make a Knights Gauntlets out of Foam -
Part 1: making the pieces

This is a tutorial on how to make a pair of knight's armor gauntlets out of foam. Very fun and easy project and you don't need a whole lot of supplies for this. I give you the template for the pieces and show you how to do it.

If you came here from youtube thanks! I will need a bit of time to make this web tutorial but the template is done. You can download it and print it right here: Foam Gauntlet Template

This is one of a series of craft foam armor projects I have where I make a complete suit of armor. You can see all those projects here.

Video Tutorial - I do have a video for this project. It is at the bottom of the page.

QUICK OVERVIEW

This is quite an easy project. Here are the basic steps:

  • Print up the template and cut out the pieces
  • Trace the pieces onto foamboard
  • Paint and seal the pieces
  • Assemble them together with hot glue
  • Foam Gauntlet Template

Note from Will: The Template and the tutorial are both absolutely free! But would you consider a donation of $1 to support my work? Paypal makes it very easy and safe. Click here to donate $1 - Every little bit helps Will to keep making great tutorials and templates. Thanks!

Materials Used: I actually use a few more materials than you see here and I will point them out in the tutorial. But these are the five basic things you need to make these gauntlets:

  1. The template
  2. 2 or 3 sheets of craft foam
  3. Paint
  4. Hot glue gun or glue
  5. A pair of work gloves (workgloves are generally more durable and stiff)

The template pieces

OK! Print up the template and cut out the various pieces depending on which size gauntlet you want to make. There are two sizes: Large and Medium/small.

Lay them out like a hand as shown in this picture. And make sure the pieces are all labeled correctly. The P-R-M and I stand for the fingers (pinky, ring, middle and index) (T is for the thumb pieces)

Keep the pieces organized like this at all times. And when you cut the foam pieces do this too. And make sure you label the foam pieces the same way. Even when painting them keep them organized so you know which piece is which.

Trace the pieces

Trace all those pieces onto foam twice. So you have two sets! And keep the two sets separated. One is a left hand and one is a right hand.

All the pieces for one hand

Here they are, laid out and being cut. This is one complete hand.
