How to make Playdough

Here's a fun project with a final product that's fun to play with. In this tutorial we show you how to make playdough. This particular recipe requires the use of a stove so children should not do this without the supervision of an adult.

We experimented with several different recipes and some that did not require any cooking, however we finally decided this was the best method. In the end you have a fun and easy to mold piece of playdough!

What you'll need:

  • 2/3 a cup of salt
  • 1/4 cup water and another 1/3 cup
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 2 tbs of cooking oil
  • Food coloring

Mixing the salt and the flour togetherStart, by adding together all of your dry ingredients. Combine 1/3 a cup of salt with a cup of flour and mix together thoroughly.

Mixing cooking oil, water, and food coloringNext, in a pan mix a 1/4 cup of water with 2 tbs of any kind of cooking oil and some food coloring.

Frying and stiring the mixtureNow, cook this ingredients on medium heat while stirring.

Warning: Children should not perform this step without the supervision of an adult.

Combining and stiring the dry ingredients into the panAfter about a min of this, add in your dry ingredients that you mixed earlier and stir thoroughly while still heating. Try to smooth out as many of the clumps as you can, however clumps are unavoidable at this point.

Adding water stiring and letting the mix cool.Once you have mixed the ingredients as best as you can take the pan off the stove. Add a 1/3 cup of water to the mixture and continue to stir.

Kneading until proper consistency is reachedWhen the ingredients have cooled down continue to knead and mix the playdough as much as you can. The more you mix the better. If you want to change the consistency of your playdough you can add water and or oil as you go along. At this point use your best judgment on how thick or watery you want this to be. Also we noticed that adding 1/3 a cup of salt at the end helps in creating a better final product. Now you're done and can have hours of fun molding whatever comes to your imagination!
