This is a tutorial showing you how to make Saruman's staff from Lord of the Rings. It is an easy project to make and I give you options for how to make the globe in the center. I also give you the template which makes it very easy for you to make this project in no time at all. The video tutorial for this project is at the bottom of the page. Will has a youtube channel with over 1000 videos on projects you can make. Check it out right here |

What You need for this project:
Let's Get Started!
Let's start this project off by making the globe in the top center of the staff. It is the most dramatic part of the staff and I will show you several different ways you can make it.
In the template I have a page with this diagram. It shows you approximately what size to make the globe.
In this tutorial I am going to show you two different ways to make the sphere. First we will use a plastic called Insta-Morph. And secondly we will use a product called Premo Sculpey Translucent. You can of course improvise your own method for making the sphere. Some suggestions are to use a tennis ball painted white. Or to use an air hardening clay like DAS (White).
Moldable Plastic - They have it in 8oz, 15oz, and 22oz
Premo Clay 8 Ounces-Translucent
DAS Air Hardening Modeling Clay, 1.1 Pound Block, White (387000)
Will's Tips on Creativity Are you interested in the creative process and how a project like this comes about? I have a little bit about developing this project right here. The Creativity of Saruman's Staff
Let's First make the Insta-Morph SphereHeat a pan of water to 140 degrees fahrenheit (60C). This is a low temp, keep the fire very low.
And pour in the beads. I used half the container .
In less than two minutes those pellets will turn clear and the whole thing will bind together. You can then pull it out.
Shake off the excess water and you can immediately start shaping it.
Ok, shape it to a nice sphere and set it aside to fully harden. Okay! Let's continue with the tutorial (Or you can watch the video tutorial below)
The Video Tutorial:
Saruman is a beautifully rendered figure with superb detailing. Twelve points of articulation mean plenty of playability, and because of the flexible vinyl "clothing," posing the figure is a snap.
