Make a miniature rolling paper theatre part 3: The script and the storyboard

In this part of the tutorial we look at the scroll, the storyboard and the script.

The size of the box is designed to make it easy for you to create a scroll. The opening of the box is sized for half the width of a regular piece of paper. So, cut sheets of printer paper right in half the long way.

And tape those scroll pieces together end to end.

And how many should you tape together?

Well, that depends on how many scenes are going to be in your story. So before we put the scroll into the box let's take a look at the script and the storyboard.

Mark your scroll with light lines. I have added dark lines just so you can see them. The first space on the left is two inches wide. That's so we have enough extra to attach it to the spindle. Then mark off each frame of the scroll as five inches wide.

The scroll

Before we install the scroll into the box we need to put the story on it! And you can do this any number of ways.

Ideas:

  • You can draw pictures into each frame (this is what we will do)
  • You can cut out pictures from a book or a magazine and glue them in
  • You can search out pictures on the internet, print them and glue them in
  • You can glue all kinds of other things on too - just as long as they are not too thick so as to jam the rotation of the spindles.

I give you in the template a couple of sheets that help you write your story. The first sheet is a blank story template. On that template you can write out in words the story you want to tell. Break it down into easy bites -each bite will be a scene.

For example:

1. The sun rises over the mountain.

2. Birds started signing

3. A groundhog poked his head out his hole and looked at the sun

4. etc...

Once you have the story written out in small bites you can then do some simple illustrations on the blank storyboard I have in the template. Each square in the storyboard is one scene in the script. Draw them out roughly. Just so you can get a sense for what each scene looks like.

Now you can use that storyboard as an aid to drawing out the actual story on the scroll. Each box in the storyboard is a 5 inch section of the scroll.

COMING: I am going to make a story for my Theater. I will put a link here when it is done.
