One of the unique things about Gimli's axe is that the handle is not round like a broomstick. It is rectangular shaped and flat like the handle of a hockey stick. This makes it kind of easy for us to make. You don't have to cut up an old broom or rake to make this project. You can just cut the handle out of foamboard. So, cut yourself four lengths of foamboard that are one inch wide. And glue them together to make a stack. This is the major part of the handle. Mine are 26 inches long. You can make your stack any length you want your axe to be.
Wrap most of the handle in duct tape. a Good point is six inches from one end then wrap it all the way to the end. This six inches is left blank because later it will be painted brown. You can see what this means by looking at the picture of the completed axe.
Make yourself another handle piece. It is also a stack of four and it is nine inches long. This is where you will attach the axe heads.
Cut out the axehead pattern and trace it onto your foam board. Trace it four times to make four axe heads.
Glue the axeheads together in pairs. You end up with a stack of two and a second stack of two.
Now to get a good axe look we are going to peel away the top layer of foam over the axe head, but not the blade section. Just the axehead half (the left half in the picture). So, cut through the paper along the line but just cut through the top layer of the paper.
Peel away the paper on the axe head side.
Then rough up the foam with sandpaper or a wire brush. This gives it a nice metal textured rough-forged look.
Let's continue with the tutorial
