Make Longclaw from Game of Thrones

Longclaw is a terrific looking sword from The Game of Thrones. This is a tutorial on how to make one out of foam board or cardboard. You don't need a whole lot of supplies and I give you the template so you can print it up and use that to make your sword.

I also have a video tutorial for this project. It is at the bottom of the page.

The Template is here

Longclaw

Materials needed for this project

  • Three sheets of foamboard
  • Paint: Black, White, Silver, Gray and Copper (or brown) (All Acrylics is good)
  • a few paint brushes
  • Hot glue gun or regular old white glue (glue gun is faster and easier)
  • Black and white electrical tape
  • A piece of foam that can be carved (about the size of the pommel on the sword
  • Masking tape or Painters tape
  • Paint brushes
  • 1 piece of crafting foam (optional)

Let's Begin

Trace the pieces

Print up the template and cut out the various pieces. Lay them on your foamboard or cardboard and trace them then cut those pieces out.

Now we are going to glue all those pieces together. They form three layers like this. And the pieces in each layer are staggered so it forms a strong sword. It is a kind of interlocking where each piece glues to two pieces under it.

How it is assembled

Gluing the three layers together.

Sand it smooth

Sand down the edges to smooth it out and make it steel like.

Paint the blade and guardNow we can do some painting. Paint the blade silver and the guard bronze or gold. You can see there we have put some blue painters tape on it. This helps to keep the painting clean. It is optional. You can also paint the handle black but we are going to wrap it in black electrical tape which looks a little better.

wrap the handle

Now wrap the handle with electrical tape. (Or paint it).

NextOk! Let's finish this sword off with the Wolf Head pommel and the details
