Make Thor's Stormbringer - Part 3 (Spackling)

In this part of the tutorial we work on the head of the weapon. We use a product called "Spackling" to smooth out the foam and give it a nice surface. It will be very similar to steel once you sand and paint it.

I also show you how it will look if you decide to simply paint it.

Spackling is easy. If you are not familiar with it spackling is a kind of putty that is used in home improvement to repair cracks and holes in walls. You simply apply it, let it dry then sand it smooth.

You can complete this project without spackling at all. It just is a bit rougher -and lighter in weight. Here is a picture showing the foam that has directly been painted on with silver paint. Just keep this in mind. But doing this does make the project easier and faster to build.

Here is a look at a piece of this foam that I have treated. This way you can see the difference in surface texture. On the left it has been spackled, sanded and painted. On the right it has been simply painted.

I use a product called Drydex spackling. The 32 oz container I bought cost six dollars.

It is available on amazon here: Drydex 32oz spackling

I like Drydex because it spreads on pink like cake frosting. And it turns white once it is dry. This way you know that it is dry. Typically, if you spread it on thick like I did it will take overnight to completely dry.

For this project you don't need 32 ounces of it. Amazon also carries an 8 ounce container of it. Which is probably enough depending on how thick you spread it on.

Drydex 8 oz spackling.

Note that spackling is a stardard supply and you can get it in a variety of sizes in any home improvement or hardware store. And it's cheap.

Go ahead and apply spackling to the whole foam head of your weapon. Spread on a liberal coat and apply some pressure so it seeps down into the cracks and crevices of the foam. The deeper it goes into the foam the stronger it will be.

Try to establish some nice crisp edgesl with the spackling. This will make it look more like metal and will make the sanding easier later on.

Okay , the spackling is done. Set it aside to dry. We will work on the handle.

It will be a bit rough at this stage. That is ok. We will sand it smooth. And, if you want it to be really special and look just like metal you can sand it smooth, apply another coat of spackling, let that dry and sand again. This will refine it even further. Multiple coats of spackling will make a big difference in the end result.

NextBut for now let's set this aside to dry and work on the handle. (Continue)
