This part is easy. We will attach the head of the axe to the handle. |
Draw a rectangle on the bottom of the axehead. Make it about the same size as the head of your handle.
We are going to be digging out that rectangular hole and gluing the handle into it. In woodworking terms this is called a mortise and tenon.
Go ahead and use some tools to dig out that mortise hole. Try to make it a snug fit. This will make it stronger. Take your time. Dig out some and test the handle, then dig some more.
Once the hole is a good fit go ahead and put a liberal amount of glue in that hole and on the handle and insert it. You can use hot glue or white glue for this. Both are effective.
Looks good!
Let's Paint it! The Axehead and hammerhead is silver, including the ornamental work.
And paint the handle brown. The color I am using is Nutmeg. I like it!
Let's add a painting detail that really looks good. This is called dry-brushing. And it will really make the axehead look like metal. Get some black paint on your brush then dab most of it off on a rag. This makes your brush rather dry but still with some black paint. Then dab the brush into various cracks and crevices of the axe head. You want more black in the crack with less and less black as you move away from the crack.
Here is a closer look. You get a used metal look this way. It's as if grime and grease has settled into the metal cracks.
Finish off the paint work by sealing everything - both the axehead and the handle, with mod podge. You can use a spray on or a brush on. Both are good. And use a gloss or high gloss if you can to get it nice and shiny. This step with the mod podge is important. It will seal and protect the stormbreaker. It makes it stronger and less prone to damage/chipping. And it will maintain the brightness of the colors. And notice that it now has a shiny appearance which is great.
Let's finish this project (continue)
