How to Make a Foam and Plaster Castle

Here is a fantastic Castle that was made by Michael. My thanks go to him for sending in the pics. And I even asked him for how he made this and he sent me these great pictures of the process of making a castle like this.

Thanks Michael!

Anyhoo, this will show you how to make your own castle just like this. And he has sent me some more pictures of other medieval structures that he has made with this process. You can check out those pics right here: Michaels Miniature Medieval Buildings and he has sent in more pictures of another castle that he has made. You can see those pictures here: Another foam castle

And here is another castle he made and he has taken pictures during the process of making it.

Michael tells us how he makes these wonderful structures:

Hello Will,
Most of the dioramas are made with styrofoam, cardboard, dry wall compound and or stucco. My outdoor diorama was built using styrofoam that I cut to shape and the two round towers are actually the cardboard inserts you would find in industrial shrink wrap. The whole building was put together using liquid nails and I stuccoed the entire fortress and added some small tile for detail.  It is completely weathered and doing great outdoors. For the  terrain I used river rocks and live moss to give it some life. The figures were actually purchased at a local toy store they were either black or silver so I had to hand paint them with color. It would be my honor for you to post my pictures on your website and if you have any further questions please feel free to contact me again. Once again Will thank you and your website and tutorials are amazing.

Best regards,
Michael

Here is a completed Castle

We start out with foam and notice the corrugated cardboard for roofing. This is a wonderful idea. Carefully peel off the top layer of paper and you have the corrugations showing. Once painted it will look fantastic.

Now we cover it with stucco or plaster. And use tools to get nice effects in it.

Coat with plaster

Almost done, More details are added and some of the base painting is done.

Adding details and paint

If the whole castle is a bit of a challenge for you it would be great to just start with a single tower like this!
