Green Chayote Squash

What is Cheyote?

I am not familiar with cheyote. It is not a staple of the typical American cuisine. But it is very common in south and central america. I thought I would give it a try.

Chayote is a pear-shaped gourd in the squash family, native to Central America, that is used both as a fruit and a vegetable . It has a mild, slightly sweet flavor and a crisp texture that becomes tender when cooked, similar to a cucumber or summer squash. All parts are edible, and it can be prepared in various ways, including being eaten raw, steamed, sautéed, or roasted.

Will's review

So, what do I think of it? What is my review?

I was a bit surprised by this vegetable. It is a type of squash and it has a very mild squash like flavor but it also has a sweetness to it! Yup, I like Chayote!

You can cook it any number of ways and for me, with limited resources, I figured I would slice it up into chunks and boil it.

It cost me $1.19 at Price Rite.

First I peeled it.

There is a heart in the middle of it similar to the inside of a pineapple so that should be removed. And it is rather sticky so I wore gloves when peeling and cutting it just to keep the mess to a minimum.

So, into the pan for boiling. I boiled it at a low boil for twenty minutes - until it was soft to a fork.

So, into a bowl...

And I mashed it and added butter.
