The Edgar Allan Poe house in Baltimore Maryland

When I took my six month adventure around America I did stay in Baltimore for a few days and on one particular day I went to the Edgar Allan Poe house. But it was closed and I was soooo disappointed.
I didn't realize that it has very limited hours and only accept visitors by reservation!

This time around I made a reservation before I even left on my mini adventure to Baltimore.

So, let's take a look at the Edgar Allan Poe house and museum.

And while I was there one of the docents recommended I also visit Edgar's gravesite which wasn't very far away. So I did that too.

First off; I was surprised to see a vintage telescope in the house. Poe was evidently interested in Astronomy and the night sky.

This is what the placard says:

"Telescope on stand English, Thomas Blunt, Maker; Cornhill, London, c. 1790 Mahogany, brass, glass

Edgar Allan Poe had a lifelong passion for science, especially astronomy. This telescope on stand was owned by his foster father, John Allan, and would have been in the Allan household when Edgar lived with them. Poe mentions the use of a telescope in his various works. - Collection of the City of Baltimore

I have been an amateur astronomer for decades; have written a book about it and built my own telescope. If you are interested in astronomy and telescopes check out that section of my website. This link opens up a new page so you can bookmark it and return to it later without losing your place on this page: Will's telescopes and astronomy section

Let's take a look at the museum - inside and out.

This is a bedroom on the top floor of the building. It is believed that this was Edgar's bedroom although it cannot be 100% verified.

The Poe house is small and intimate. On the third floor is the bedroom; on the second floor is a pair of rooms with lots of memorabilia and information about Poe; and on the first floor is a gift shop with an amazing array of Poe memorabilia.

I made an Edgar Allan Poe scene box

It is a replica of Edgar's actual bedroom in Baltimore Maryland. And I add a twist! It has a beating heart under the floor boards and it has the actual sound of a beating heart. Watch the video and learn how I made it right here: The Edgar Allan Poe Scene box

1. The Walters Museum - which included a whole bunch of wonderful things including the illuminated manuscripts, a 17 century Flemish chamber of wonders, and a great exhibition of Medieval arms and armor.

2. Overview of Baltimore and my stay there

3. The famous Graffiti Alley - This was an unexpected surprise for me.

4. The Basilica of the Assumption - It's a beautiful cathedral but I was very much surprised by the fact that it was not built in the gothic style.

5. The Peabody Library - They do not build libraries like this anymore.
