Make the Elven Bow from Skyrim

This is a tutorial on how to make the Elven Bow from Skyrim. It doesn't really function as a bow though. It is just for show, costumes or cosplay!

The template for this project is here

I also have a video tutorial that you can watch at the bottom of the page.

Materials for this project:

  • Some sheets of foamboard. You are probably going to need five sheets. I used one very large sheet.
  • Piece of string for the bow string
  • Gold paint
  • Brown Paint (optional)
  • Touch up paint and marker, brown, white, gray
  • Some kind of glue or a hot glue gun
  • The Template
  • 1 36 inch long wooden dowel (1/4 inch thick) For the arrow

Note from Will: The Template and the tutorial are both absolutely free! But would you consider a donation of $1 to support my work? Paypal makes it very easy and safe. Click here to donate $1 - Every little bit helps Will to keep making great tutorials and templates. Thanks!

Let's Get Started!

Cut the template pieces

Print up the template and cut out the pieces.

The template pieces for the bow

There are four pieces that make up a bow piece (1,2,3 and 4). Tape those four pieces together like this. There is also a drawing in the template that shows you how.

The wing template

Also tape together the two pieces of the wing template. Note that the template is a bit off. I have one piece upside down in the drawing. Flip the small piece over before taping it to the large peice. Put it together so the curves and lines match smoothly like this picture.

The pieces are drawn

Now use those two templates to trace the shapes onto foamboard. Trace four of the bow pieces and four of the wing pieces. In the picture you see that I have them all on one piece of foamboard. I purchased an oversized piece. You can just use several of the regular (20x30) foamboard sheets.

Cut out the pieces

Go ahead and cut those pieces out!

Tip on how to cut foam board: Use a sharp knife. It makes a big difference. An x-acto knife is perfect for this. And make several passes. Don't try to cut all the way through in one pass. Typically three passes is perfect. With the first pass you cut the top layer of paper. The second pass cuts through the foam and the third pass cuts through the bottom layer of paper. this will give you a nice clean and easy cut.

OKAY! Will says "Enough of the pre-work!" Let's build the bow. Continue. But if you need supplies check out the links below

United Cutlery UC3031 'The Hobbit' Elven Bow and Arrow of Tauriel

Ariel is a Sylvan Elf and daughter of Kirkwood. A favorite of King Tranquil and Captain of his Woodland Guard, she is an expert fighter and extremely fast and agile in battle. Her signature weapons are twin daggers and a bow. The bow is a deadly accurate traditional resurvey design used by the Woodland Guard, ornately carved with leaf motifs and hoof-shaped string nocks. United Cutlery's replica is crafted of steel-reinforced Polynesian, with precise detailing and colors to exactly match the movie prop. It is presented with a poly stone wall mount featuring a graphic motif of Ariel.
