A Flanged Mace was a type of percussive weapon used during the middle ages and medieval times. It was a hammer of sorts and a mace with flanges on it. These flanges allowed the mace to grip and get a bit of tooth on an opponents plate mail armor thus transferring more force. In this tutorial I show you how to make one out of basic materials including a wooden dowel and some foam board or cardboard. The Template for this project is right here. Video: I also have a youtube video for this project on my youtube channel right here.

Bonus Material with this tutorial: If you want a flanged mace you can use for cosplay or for some simple sparring I will show you how to make one out of EVA Foam which is a strong and moderately durable foam which will be safe but able to take some use as an actual mace. If you are interested only in making this weapon you can skip to that part of the tutorial right here: EVA Foam Mace for Sparring and Cosplay.

Let's Get Started
Print up the template and take a look at it. There are seven different types of flanges. Decide which flange you want on your mace. For this tutorial I chose type 1.
Lay the image of your chosen flange on top of a sheet of foam board and trace over the lines with a blunted pencil. This will leave an indent in the foamboard.
This picture shows indents in the foam board. With a pencil draw out those indents so you can see the flanges. Trace your chosen flange type four times. You will need four of them.
On the last page of the template you see these four parts. Also transfer these parts to the foamboard. You need two of each that you see here in the picture.
Ok, cut out all those parts. You end up with twelve. Let's continue with the tutorial and make the mace
The Medieval Mace made by Deepeeka is an accurate replica ornate based off historical research and authentic in its design. This incredible reproduction was taken from Hans Sloan's small collection at the British Museum and was an important medieval article. Made popular in the middle ages, this mace could damage the enemy even when protected with metal armour. It was commonly manufactured at a low cost and was effective and easy to handle. Our version is made of high carbon steel materials. Length: 54 cm / 21.2", Depth of flanges: 5 cm / 2" and Weight: 1 kg / 2.2 lbs. This is perfect addition to your collection, a companion to your high-end costume or simply to impress friends and family! Need wooden dowel for this project?
